Does an Item in your Closet Define You?
Why I chose the black turtleneck as my uniform is still unclear. It was not like I had a plan to wear all black every day, it just evolved. I like it because it makes me feel invisible and right now, I like flying under the radar of the fashionistas. Then again, maybe it was just a natural progression after wearing a tuxedo for 20 years!
Suddenly curious, I went on a hunt for the history of the black turtleneck!
Introduced in the 19th century the black turtleneck soon became a favorite among the working class for its warmth and easy care.
Ok! Makes sense.
Fishermen, laborers, and eventually polo players adopted the turtleneck giving it the original name of the ‘polo neck.’ Although turtleneck has become the most commonly used name, it can still be recognized as the polo-neck, on occasion.
When fashion introduction the ‘Gibson Girl’ in the 1920’s the turtleneck quickly became a popular item for ladies. Although the Gibson Girl was a fictional character, she represented the ‘visual idea’ of the perfect woman.
She introduced the high neckline as the beautiful, independent, active woman.
