Do You Believe in Destiny?

Destiny, as determined by the Collins English Dictionary is: the predetermined or inevitable course of events.

Many years ago, I was down and out. The oldest of my four children had not yet turned four and my husbands girlfriend was pregnant. Neither of the two choices available to me were acceptable — go on Welfare or give up my children. I chose Welfare, and hoped no one ever found out.

Shortly, the Welfare person visited my home and told me ‘they’ wanted me to enter a local Beauty Contest. It would cost $50 for the make-up kit, which they would pay for. This was outlandishly stupid to me! We are on the dole and they offer to pay $50 for a make-up kit. Instead, I asked for the extra $50 to help feed my children. They declined.

As luck would have it, I won the Beauty Contest which included a Four Year Scholarship with the Model Agency. I had to confess I was six-weeks pregnant ending any opportunity I could have had for becoming a model. I call this ‘Fate!’

Six years later, off welfare after 11 months, and with a full time job since: I stopped to watch a parade along with thousands of other people. Someone taps me on the shoulder. A businessman in a sassy-suit hands me his card saying he owned a Modeling Agency just off Montgomery Street and he would like to hire me as a leg model.

It was the same agency I had to turn down six years before! He could not have known it was me from the Beauty Contest years before because only two women were in charge of selecting me as the winner. No men were involved in the process.

I call this Destiny!
